'Not About Heroes' Finishes Run
After seven performances at both Riverhouse and Cranleigh Arts Centre, 'Not About Heroes' finished its run last week. Of particular relevance were the two performances given on Armistice Day.
The production has been very well received and the performances of David Webb as Siegfried Sassoon and Nick Lund as Wilfred Owen, highly praised. Reviews by Jeff Thomson and Roger Moody, together with a collection of comments from our audiences may be read on the 'Past Productions' page.
All four evening performances at both venues played to full houses and the three matinees were also very well attended attracting school parties from as far afield as Worcester and Bedfordshire. At Riverhouse, a workshop centred on the production was held for a group of students from Thamesmead School, Shepperton.

'Waiting For Godot' for July 2010
After several months of negotiations, Lighted Fools Theatre Company has finally been granted permission by Samuel Beckett's agent to present 'Waiting for Godot' at the Riverhouse, Walton-on-Thames from 21st to 24th July 2010. The play will be directed by Karen Sahlsberg, who played Shirley Valentine to great acclaim this past summer. This will be Karen's second production for the Company, having directed 'The Dresser' in 2008.
The strong cast will be lead by David Webb as Vladimir and Richard Parish as Estragon. Pozzo will be played by Gary Griffiths, Lucky by Thom Gibbons and the Boy by Max Usher.
Gary Griffiths has worked for some years with companies in the Woking and Guildford area but this will be his first appearance with Lighted Fools. Thom Gibbons makes a welcome return to the Company having last appeared seven years ago as Ray Dooley in the 2002 production of 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane'. Young Max Usher will also be making his first appearance with Lighted Fools.
Karen has a number of innovative ideas for 'Godot' which promises to be an exciting project.

'Not About Heroes' Heading For Another Sell-Out
With only a week to go before the first performance at Cranleigh Arts Centre, the two evening performances of 'Not About Heroes' are heading for a repeat of the recent sell-outs at Walton-on-Thames. There are still a good number of seats available for the 2.00pm matinee performance on Armistice Day, 11th November but only 24 for the evening performance. 31 seats remain for the final performance of the play on Thursday 12th November. Ring the Box Office on 08456-128128 as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Dennis Silk, the former schoolmaster and international cricketer, who was a close friend of Siegfried Sassoon and about whom he has spoken and written extensively is giving a lecture on the poet at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham on Friday evening, 6th November. During the early 1950s, Silk was introduced to the cricket-loving, Sassoon by a mutual acquaintance, Edmund Blunden. Until Sassoon's death in 1967, Silk was one of his closest friends, and made several unique recordings of the poet reading his own work at home in Heytesbury, Wiltshire. These formed the basis of a BBC Radio 4 programme on the subject: Siegfried Sassoon: a Friend.
Mr Silk is aware of the Lighted Fools production of 'Not About Heroes' and will be referring to it during his lecture at Christ's Hospital.

Wilfred Owen's Nephew at Performance of 'Not About Heroes'
'Not About Heroes' played to full houses at the evening performances this week at Riverhouse. The two matinees were also well supported. The play has been extremely well received and the performances of both David Webb and Nick Lund highly praised. The Company was delighted that on Wednesday evening, Wilfred Owen's nephew, Peter Owen, was in the audience. Mr Owen met the Director and cast after the performance and said how moved he was by the production.
The play will be performed again at Cranleigh Arts Centre (Box Office 08456-128128) on the 11th and 12th November

'Not About Heroes' Selling Well
The Company's forthcoming production of Stephen Macdonald's moving play, based on the relationship between Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, is fast approaching and selling well. The evening performances at Riverhouse, Walton-on-Thames are nearly sold out. Tickets are still available, however, for the matinees and also for all performances at Cranleigh Arts Centre where it will be performed, significantly, on Armistice Day as well as Thursday 12th November.

'The Dumb Waiter' Wins Runner-Up Trophy at 2009 British All-Winners
'The Dumb Waiter' won The NDFA Council Trophy as Runner-Up at this year's British All-Winners Festival. David Webb and Richard Parish received the award, in front of a packed Rhoda McGaw Theatre from Michael Lees, Chairman of NDFA. During its run, which began last October at the 50th Woking Festival, the production has collected four awards and five nominations.
Congratulations to Karvid Productions from Hemel Hempstead who pipped us into first place with their production of 'Alas Poor Fred' by James Saunders. Congratulations also to our friends Runnymede Drama Group who took the Adjudicator's Award and the backstage Award with their production of 'The King' by Stewart Conn.

'The Dumb Waiter' at 2009 British All-Winners
The Company's production of 'The Dumb Waiter' was presented in the 2009 NDFA British All-Winners Festival at The Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking last Sunday evening 19th July. It opened the week-long festival which comprises nine adult one-act plays, three youth one-act plays and three full-length plays all of which have won festivals throughout the UK during the past year. Lighted Fools received an excellent adjudication from GODA Adjudicator Mike Kaiser. The winners will be announced and the awards presented after the performance of the final play this coming Saturday, 25th July

'Shirley Valentine'
'Shirley Valentine' recently finished its run at the Riverhouse Barn, Walton-on-Thames. Apart from a few available seats on the first night, it played to full houses and received two very good reviews from Colin Dolley and Jeff Thompson which may be read on our 'Past Productions' page. Audience reaction was very positive and Karen Sahlsberg's performance as Shirley was much praised. To everyone's relief, particularly hers, poor Karen waited until after the final performance to fall victim to swine flu!

Invitation to 2009 British All-Winners
For the second time in three years, Lighted Fools Theatre Company has received an invitation to take part in the NDFA's British All-Winners Drama Festival. 'The Dumb Waiter', which was Runner-Up at last October's 50th Woking Festival and then went on the next week to win the Spelthorne and Runnymede Festival, will be presented in the 2009 All-Winners on Sunday 19th July, the opening night.
This prestigious event, featuring some of the best amateur companies in the UK, all of which have won a festival during the last year, will be held in Woking from 19th to 25th July.
